I took my hardtail out for a rip last week and found that I was nailing corners in a way that I'd never done before.

I can give part credit to the fact that I've been on a short-travel fully for a bit, but the rest of that credit can be chalked up to my rides with other guys who are much better in the corners than I am (the weakest part of my skill set).

So, while the improvements in my descending aren't a direct result of formal coaching sessions, with the help of some really good riders, I've been able to identify better techniques and line choices by isolating problems and working on them until they get better. This is something that's really difficult without a trained eye and a lot of practice.

I learned as much in 3 hrs with Gene as I have in the last 8 years. My overall speed across an XC course has increased by at least several minutes strictly due to skills: mainly overall increased speed on straightline downhills and increased cornering/exit speed.

Fasterer is more funnerer

I think that one thing that can't be stressed enough is that you could take years to get better or get to the same place in a much shorter period of time with a coach. Which would you choose? And one must remember, you might just not ever get better on your own!

I guess it just depends on how motivated you are to get somewhere fast, huh?

[...] On Tuesday, Guitar Ted served up a helping of advice on tweaking your bike so it feels ‘just right’. If you haven’t thought about doing this, it might be a good idea to spend a week or two worth of riding making little adjustments to your ride — you could be surprised at the results. For Wednesday, Ashwin posted up a great interview with cycling coach Gene Hamilton; there are lots of good tips and some amusing anecdotes hiding inside the writeup. Dan followed up his preview of the 24 Hours of Summer Solstice with a recap of the event. It sounds like a good time, and the starting line photos make the event look like it was a UCI World Cup race. [...]

Why you need a mountain bike coach right now

Because you suck! Ok...just kidding...I couldn't resist. Actually, it's because mountain biking takes skill and skill takes practice to refine. Even if you go out to ride with a plan to work on a specific skill if you are not
