2006 Sea Otter Classic: Event news

I’ll be using this space to provide updates on the events that are taking place at the 2006 Sea Otter Classic. Don’t expect full race results but do expect outgoing links to websites that are offering solid perspectives on the event.

NorCal MTB Racing. Our friends over at NorCal MTB Racing are participating in the event and providing solid updates on what’s going on. Head on over — it’s well worth a visit.

Update (8 April 2006): Pinkbike.com. Pinkbike has a short piece that covers the early stages of the event and provides some great shots at new gear. There’s a new trail bike by Titus, spec’d with a Fox 36 and some carbon brakes by Magura. And, although I’m not a fan of the colour, the pink Specialized Epic that Sabine Spitz is riding for the coming season looks hawt.

Update (8 April 2006): Super XC race results. Mountain Bike Action has a good recap of the action that went down on the second official day of Sea Otter. In the women’s field, Gunn-Rita Dahle annihilated the competition — she won be over three minutes during the 60 minute event. You can find full results at the Sea Otter Classic website.

Update (11 April 2006): Full race results. With this year’s edition of the Sea Otter Classic wrapping up over the weekend, full-fledged race reports and event recaps are popping up all over the place.

Bike Magazine has a load of pictures archived for your viewing pleasure in its 2006 Sea Otter Classic image gallery. Mountain Bike Action posted a good recap of the cross country event — check out the site’s main page for features on Sea Otter’s other races.

And for those of you who had any doubt about which pro woman is in dominant early season form, Gunn-Rita Dahle won the final leg of the women’s cross country event by 4:39 (and only 4 women finished within 10 minutes of her).

2006 UCI World Cup # 1: Curacao

The first leg of the UCI World Cup cross country series was held on the Caribbean island of Curacao over the weekend and, mostly, the big names finished where you’d expect them. The races were shortened because of high temperatures and high humidity — something that many riders had difficulties with on the day. Read the rest of this entry »

2006 Sugoi Dirt Series

Sugoi Dirt Series

Hey Ladies! Looking to learn some new skills or improve on those that you already have in an encouraging and positive environment? This season the Sugoi Dirt Series will be offering 15-20 locations to pick from.

Beginnings: the origins of the Dirt Series

In 2000, the BC provincial government launched an initiative to bring more women into the sport of mountain biking and to encourage further those who were already committed to the sport. Since then the series has grown from an event that taught bike skills to women into one that now includes a couple of coed locations. Candace Shadley, the founder and director of the series, can still be found at select locations teaching skills to participants. Read the rest of this entry »

Bike Magazine does Crankworx

Bike magazine has been stepping it up in the past few months with some great product reviews, in addition to coverage of events like Crankworx and the Transrockies Challenge.

That being said, the current Crankworx summary on the Bike website is a little, well, uninspired. While the included photos are of good quality, the article is stiched together from numerous press releases and gets the details on the Air DH mixed up with those of another race. I understand that Crankworx isn’t the be-all-and-end-all for the industry and that a number of factors influence coverage of a specific event (ie. budget, time, location, etc.), but I was hoping for a little more insight from the magazine.

If you’re looking for an in-depth review of the events that took place at Crankworx 2005 I’d recommend moving on over to NSMB.com. NSMB has a great recap of the Slopestyle event that’s worth looking at if you’re into this type of thing.

Crankworx coverage from other sources

“My guy” spent much of his time up at Crankworx collecting great video footage of the event and did a great job doing so. While he was able to grab a sneak peek of the 2006 Brodie Nemesis, an event as hectic (and packed) as Crankworx is best covered by a bunch of people.

In this vein of thought, NSMB.com posted a couple of articles about the goods they saw on display this past week at Crankworx. First up from the NSMB crew is a write up on the new components that were on display at the festival. Of special note in this writeup are the chrome-plated El Caminos that were sported by Slopestyle runner-up Darren Berrecloth, the 2006 Rock Shox World Cup, and a prototype DH brake from Hayes Disc Brakes.

Also, NSMB has some great shots of a bunch of 2006 bikes. Featured in their article are new Konas, Rocky Mountains, Brodies, Norcos, and more! Check each of the articles out for some great photos and good product writeups.

Crankworx 2005 video footage

Cam Zink at CrankworxI promise this is the last entry devoted to Crankworx 2005 until next year. The events ended this past Sunday and I was just given some footage covering many of the events (please right click and save) up there. For all of you who have never been up to the Whistler Bike Park, this video gives you an idea about what you’re missing. And don’t worry, the rider featured in the last section (Kyle Strait) is ok — he walked away from the crash.

To view the video, you’ll need to have Quicktime 7 installed on your computer. If I knew how to convert the file back to an older version of Quicktime I would but, unfortunately, video manipulation is not my forte. If you’re interested in downloading a version of the video clip with a much higher resolution, drop me a line and I’ll hook you up.

Note : Most of the content on this site is licensed under a Creative Commons License. However, the contents of the Crankworx 2005 video do not fall under CCL licensing. All footage is property of Brent Tahk and can not be resold, reused, or redistributed without the written permission of Brent Tahk. The music is from Juno Reactor’s Labyrinth.

Crankworx 2005 wrap up

The 2005 Crankworx Mountain Bike Festival is over for another year. This year’s event was larger and more heavily promoted than those in the past and, by and large, the event lived up to the hype surrounding it. Riders went faster and bigger more times than I care to count and, in the Slopestyle competition, pulled a handful of new tricks out their back pockets.

On one hand I think the event is great because it exposes a large number of people to mountain bikes and mountain biking. Events like Slopestyle bring together world-class riders and the companies whose wares they promote for a relatively small purse, which undoubtedly is recovered through licensing fees, vendor booths, and tourist visits to Whistler Village. On the other hand, the Gong Show that is Crankworx takes a little bit away from how most people experience mountain biking. Standing at the base of the lifts or at the edges of the Slopestyle competition, it’s easy to forget that most mountain bikers won’t ever ride in a lift-accessed bike park and many wouldn’t even consider partaking in said activity.

In a nutshell, Crankworx is a great tourist draw that is marketed extremely well. It’s fun to hang around the village and soak up the atmosphere and watch top riders like Brian Lopes, Steve Peat, and Cedric Gracia do their things. However, it’s easy to get caught up in the “hooplah” of the event and forget that, for many, Crankworx is the antithesis of what mountain biking is about — getting out on the trails on your bike and having a good time by yourself or with your friends.

Crankworx 2005 Garbonzo DH results

Cedric Gracia failed in his bid to win both the Crankworx Air DH and the Garbonzo DH. Last year’s Garbonzo DH champ blew a tire coming out of the first corner on his run and was relegated to last place at the end of the day. The same can not be said of Brian Lopes who, after solid results in the Air DH and Biker X competitions, took home first place in the Pro Men category on the day. Steve Peat finished fewer than two seconds behind Lopes, with Aussie riders Nathan Rennie and Chris Kovarik finishing in third and fourth place respectively.

Marla Streb cruised to first place in the Pro Women category, with a 37 second margin of victory over second place finisher Fionn Griffiths. Lisa Mylak and Claire Buchar rounded out the top four placings for the Pro women.

Garbonzo DH results - Pro Men

  1. Brian Lopes 14:31.67
  2. Steve Peat 14:32.50
  3. Nathan Rennie 14:33.15
  4. Chris Kovarik 14:35.66
  5. Tyler Morland 14:36.36

Garbonzo DH results - Pro Women

  1. Marla Streb 16:03.12
  2. Fionn Griffiths 16:40.19
  3. Lisa Mylak 17:25.47
  4. Claire Buchar 17:25.58
  5. Ashley McIvor 17:51.95

Crankworx 2005 Slopestyle results

There were a tonne of quality riders signed up for the Slopestyle event at Crankworx for 2005. The lineup figured to throw it down for the second year in a row after Paul Basagoitia’s back flip-tail whip combo won him the Slopestyle competition in 2004.

Confirmed participants included the winner of last year’s Slopestyle Paul Basagoitia, runner-up Timo Pritzel, Kyle Strait, Cameron Zink, Cam McCaul, Richie Schley, Cedric Gracia, Darren Berrecloth, Thomas Vanderham, Wade Simmons, Aaron Chase, Dave Watson, and Jordie Lunn. Add five qualifiers into the mix and you had the ingredients for a flat-out impressive final round.

When the final tallies were made, Paul Basagoitia was again crowned winner of the Crankworx Slopestyle. Paul B pulled consecutive backflips and linked together some impressive lines to edge out Darren Berrecloth, who nailed a 360 off a rather large road gap / drop. I’ll post some more nuggets about the 2005 Slopestyle event in the next day or two.

2005 Crankworx Slopestyle results

  1. Paul Basagoitia (USA)
  2. Darren Berrecloth (CAN)
  3. Cameron Zink (USA)
  4. Cameron McCaul (USA)
