Putting in some distance, trying out a new bike

I know, I know, I was going to build up the hardtail. I will still do that, but I’ve been sidetracked by a new ride.

A couple of weeks back, I picked up the Haro Sonix S and I’ve been grinding out some miles as I get the bike dialled in and get used to running a shorter travel fork up front. The Sonix rolls nicely on gravel and it climbs well on steeps but I think I need to spend some more time with the Reba. I’ll do a more complete writeup after I’ve spent more time on the trails.

Cycling goal setting in 2007

Well after a two-month break we’re finally back to work here. With family to visit, parties to attend and presents to buy, sometimes cycling gets put on the backburner around the Christmas holidays. Now that the New Year is here, it’s nice to be able to get back to the regular routine of riding, planning and (of course) trying to post some stuff up here on TBH.

My first post for 2007, other than to apologize for not posting in so long, is about setting goals. January is the perfect time of year to start looking ahead to the upcoming riding season and trying to establish what you would like to accomplish this year. Read the rest of this entry »

Summer holidays

I’m off for a week of holidays so don’t expect any updates until next weekend! I had planned on having stuff queued up for a timed release but it didn’t happen. Get out and enjoy the rest of the summer.

See you in a bit.

Product in the pipe: August 2006

You regulars out there will have noticed that we haven’t been posting up a lot of reviews (none would probably be more accurate), but there is a lot of stuff that’s nearly ready to go.

I’ve been running a bunch of new stuff on my Trance, including some Hayes El Caminos, Mavic CrossMax XLs, and Kenda Nevegals. Also, there are some apparel and accessory reviews on the way, with Ashwin’s evaluation of a pack by Wingnut and my thoughts on the Giro Animas xc lid, some shorts and gloves from Louis Garneau, gloves from Troy Lee Designs, and whatever else I can squeeze out of my brain. We’ll also have a couple of writeups on gear from Pricepoint’s Sette brand.

It’s been a great summer so far, and that’s contributed mightily to this site’s decrease in content, but I know you all understand. Most of you will agree that getting out there is far more appealing a prospect than sitting around the house…

Landis sample fails second test, could be stripped of Tour de France title

It was announced Saturday that Floyd Landis’ ‘B’ sample tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone. According to CyclingNews.com, “Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry test (IRMS) had also been done, revealing the presence of exogenous testosterone (contained within, but originating from outside the body) in the sample.”

So, aside from the obvious fact that the UCI is going to push for a multi-year suspension of The Floyd, it looks as though the American is going to lose the 2006 Tour de France title. If the title is taken from Landis, it’ll go to Oscar Pereiro, who finished second to the ex-Phonak rider at the end of the event.

My thoughts? Aside from being disappointed by the audacity of these riders who try to pull the wool over everybody’s eyes, I don’t really care. There were some really dramatic stages this year — Phonak giving Pereiro the yellow jersey after a useless ‘defense’ where the Spaniard regained almost 30 minutes in the GC, Landis cracking spectacularly in the Alps, Landis going ape shit on the rest of the field the next day — and that’s what I’ll remember.

Pereiro can be the paper champion and be memorialized for that: the first rider ever to win the Tour who didn’t actually win the race. And I’m not saying Landis is or isn’t the ‘real’ champ either but, after all of the suspensions and hellfire that came down in the days before the start of the race, I wouldn’t be disappointed if the results of the 2006 Tour de France were voided and a blank space left in the annals.

Tough luck bro‘, but you’re involved in a sport with so many crooks and cheats that it’s difficult to take anything at face value. But whatever happens, your ride during Stage 17 will still go down as one for the ages.

Update on updates

I’m going camping up in the hills for a couple of days to escape the blistering heat. I’ve still got a back log of stuff to post up, but that’ll have to wait until I get back.

Enjoy the weather but be smart about riding in the hot.

The horror!

Loose corner. Power slide. Saddle. Bruises. Icepack. Ok, but no posting for a bit.

Hooray for comment spam!

I’ve been inundated with comment spam over the past few days and my spam filter isn’t picking them up. So, until I can get a handle on this stuff, I’ll be moderating all comments on The Biking Hub.

What does that mean to you? Comments will no longer appear immediately after you submit them. Sorry, but since I don’t really feel like pimping sex aids or porn sites, this is the way it has to be for the short term.

Any rock solid solutions out there? Other than eliminating comments, of course…

Product in the pipe: February 2006

Today, as I struggled to come to grips with how terrible the 2006 edition of Canada’s Olympic men’s hockey team is, I started to think about how much is going on with this site at the moment and how little I’ve let everyone out there (ie. you) in on what’s coming up with the site. We’ve got a bunch of new gear coming up for some testing and review time, so you can expect to read about our experiences with:

There’s a bunch more gear that I haven’t listed, so keep your eyes peeled and we’ll post up our thoughts after we’ve spent some time with it.

The Injury Update

I’m not back on the bike yet and it’s killing me. Normally, I’m able to get out for rides between four and six times per week and since I bailed a few weeks back, I haven’t been on a bike at all.

For those of you who are interested, the sticking point is that the C2 and C3 vertebrae are “locked” in position, a situation that’s preventing me from getting decent head rotation and causing minor muscle discomfort in my upper back. It’s definitely not a great prognosis and I’d rather not be in this situation, but the positive side is that I can still walk and all that. And the good news is that I’m getting better and I expect to be riding sooner rather than later.

That being said, the testing schedule that I have for this site has been thrown into disarray and, while I do have a couple of riders doing product testing, there will be a gap for a little while. I’m planning on publishing a review for this Monday and another one shortly thereafter but, beyond that, you’ll need to be patient and wait for the spring flood.
