[...] I know, I know. Another Crank Brothers pedal review. I’m an unabashed supporter of Crank Brothers‘ egg beater pedal platform. For the type of riding I do most, the Crank Bros Mallet pedals are a great easy-in, easy-out option that don’t pick up mud on the trails. And it doesn’t hurt that there’s a decent all-mountain / cross country option in the Candy SL, which allows me to run the same pair of shoes for every type of riding I do.
[...] Back in June, I published my review of the Crank Bros. Mallet C pedals. By and large, I liked the pedals and my only real criticisms related to the removable traction plate and the need for shims to create tread clearance on most popular shoe brands. Five months removed from my original review and the pedals are going strong — both pedals are in need of a rebuild kit but, other than that, perform as well now as the day they were first mounted.
[...] I ran these pedals on an ‘all mountain’ bike (a Giant AC1) for a single ride; during this ride I found that the spindles weren’t quite up to what we ride on a regular basis out here in British Columbia. On the first drop on the trail — a five or six foot kick off a rock — one of the spindles bent. It wasn’t so bad that I couldn’t ride back to the car, but I wouldn’t recommend these pedals for ‘light freeride’ where drops above three feet are common. If you’re looking for a clip-based pedal that’s more suited for this type of riding, be sure to check out the Crank Bros. Mallet. [...]
