Seventh Secret on Mt. Fromme

I don’t spend too much ride time on Vancouver’s North Shore but, a couple of times per year, I throw my bike on my car and make the 45 minute drive to one of the Shore’s main mountain bike destinations (Seymour, Fromme, or Cypress). On a whim, I headed out to Fromme this morning to ride Seventh Secret, a technical singletrack line that winds its way through some pretty steep, rooty terrain.
The day was blessed with classic Shore weather — light rain and low cloud — and I passed a bunch of riders on the way up who were looking for the same type of day as me. After I got over the fact that my Crank Bros. Egg Beaters and my shoes didn’t get along, and there wasn’t much I could do about it (the wet rubber on the soles of my shoes squeaked every which way but loose whenever they were in contact with the spindles on the Egg Beaters), I settled into the 35ish minute climb up to Seventh.
The ride

How’s that for a drop in? A steep, rocky section makes for a good introduction to the trail.

I rolled through Seventh without any dabs and my Trance performed admirably. I received a rebuilt and factory tuned Fox Float R from Push Industries a few weeks back (review to come) and I must say that the shock helped the bike handle everything with aplomb.
After finishing with Seventh, I continued down Leopard, Kirkford, and Crinkum Crankum, which were all pretty fun. I took fewer pics on the second half of the descent because I wanted to listen to some tunes and enjoy the day.

I came upon this classic bit of signage, and it led to a ‘Which way do I go?’ moment. I took the double black. It was a steep, rocky trail but it was pretty decent.

The exit to the double black trail. Check out the grooves that have been worn into the rung on the top roller — these trails see some serious traffic.

Definitely one of my favourite rides in Vancouver. Seventh isn’t all that life-threatening and with some good brakes + big tires + cushy suspension it’s a pretty mellow ride. A real classic.
